Connecting to the pain in China via USM Upper School

I know I’m not the only person who has been moved by the photos and stories of the earthquake victims in Sichuang Province. Despite the many miles that separate us, all of us who have and work with children can feel the pain that parents and the Chinese community are feeling as they face the loss of so many children.

The Upper School students and faculty are organizing several efforts to raise money for earthquake victims in China. The following is from Ms. Lu, the Chinese teacher in the US:

We have been conscious that at 2:30 in the afternoon of Beijing time on May 12th, 2008, a 7.9 destructive and devastating earthquake struck the south west part of China, Sichuang province, and caused severe damage and unimaginable lost in human history once again. Hundreds of children were in schools, the 5 or 6 stories high school buildings collapsed into two yards tall debris. Many lost their young lives, which were the hope of their parents and families, the future of our country, and the promise of our mother earth.

I know we all differ in our culture, language, religion, costume, hair texture, the length of our nails or skin color. However, I know we are all defined by the one and only same principle – human. Our whole school is working on a fund raising project for an affected school in Sichuang. Our goal is for me to bring the money personally, and put it into the principal’s hands and proudly tell him “This is the money from a school 6,000 miles away, we care! We are standing right next to you, and we are willing to help you!”

How great to know that we can help and make a personal connection to the people in Sichuang.

Here are the opportunities to build the gift that Ms. Lu will be delivering to China

· On Monday evening, we will be accepting donations at our Evening of One Act Plays (Theater, 7:00 PM).
